This course is a 100% worth the annual subscription in my opinion. I've taken another course from Rodgon and it was the course that started me drawing again almost 2 or 3 years ago. If you want to learn anatomy this is a great course. It doesn&
+ Show more
#039;t go into the boring and grating detail of bones, muscles etc. but it gives you a great foundation and leaves you in an excellent place to study and practice anatomy and character drawing. I thoroughly enjoyed the eye mask method, the nose trick and surprisingly, the foot trick. Also thanks to this course I can now draw eyes from every angle. It doesn't come without its criticism however. Rodgon is a little chaotic in his delivery which isn't a bad thing per se. If long diatribes bore you this won't happen here, but after a while it does start to get a little bit confusing, requiring multiple watches to get the module. I think part of the reason is his insistence on drawing over a sketch a hundred times rendering a sketch illegible by the end instead of copying and demonstrating on a clear paper. Sometimes I couldn't even tell what he was trying to show because a sketch looked like a smudge instead of a body. I think somewhere along module 15 about the neck, jaw and ear things went a little too chaotic for a few modules. I didn't think there was enough time spent on those or the chin and the unclear sketches didn't help. I would love a little more structure and theory. And I would have loved some exercise sheets as it seems most exercises were a "just do this a few times". I think the course suffers for it and would benefit from some clear instructions on exercise sheets. However, that's only a small criticism and despite it I still think I understand the body better for it and I believe this course is worth it. I would love a 2.0 course on anatomy from Rodgon, building further into this course and going into a little more detail.

ish there were drawing assignments with each lesson, but I was able to create my own practice sessions with the provided resources. Also, I think that I would have preferred curriculum with fewer species, but that goes more in depth (especially with different angles and poses). But that being said, it is a class geared towards beginners, so it makes sense as is. And probably has broader appeal because of that. Overall, I’m very happy I took this class and I learned a lot. As I decide which classes to take next, I’ll definitely be looking for more from Rodgon.

Hi Sabby!

It looks like you’re doing great so far! I particularly like how soft your blending looks.

Here are some suggestions to help with shadow placement:

  • The area where the light hits directly will be the lightest. If you accidentally make it too dark, you can gently erase parts to bring back some of the white of the paper.

  • The shadows fall on the opposite side to the light. If the light is hitting the top, the shadows will be below. If the light is coming from the right, the shadows will be on the left. You can draw lines from the light-source to the object to help visualize where they should be.

Look at objects in your everyday life and just try to observe what the shadows are doing. Drawing the things around you is a fun way to practice, too. 🙂

You have done well with these. Nice work!

Hello Jan-Olaf!

We’re really glad to hear that you enjoyed the course! All the little details you've added created a lot of extra fun and joy to the drawings.

If you wish to keep working on the castle drawing, there are some small changes you could make to the perspective on the towers.

To find the angle for the curved lines you would draw the tower as if it was a square-shaped tower first, using the perspective lines in the same way you did for the rest of the castle.

After that you draw a circle that fits inside the square formed by the perspective lines. From here you can use that circle as a guide for the rest of the curves.

You have done an excellent job with all of these and have applied every technique that you learned very well. Keep up the good work!

Hi!

Thank you for sending in your painting! This is incredible work. The subject is beautiful and your use of color is mind-blowing!

You could maybe try to have the hair on the chin flow in more various and natural directions. Even with the head clearly in motion within the scene and the hair following in the same direction, I think there could be a little more variation.

Quek Jae Sern (Jae)

Hey Nadia,

I’m glad that you’re having fun with the course. Don’t worry, the three-dimensional drawings are typically the most complicated. I think the issue that you’re having here is that the initial block you drew is more of a cuboid than a cube. The starting cube will influence the final look of the drawing.

In your drawing, I’m noticing that your block needs to be slightly taller to make it a cube. Once you have a good starting point, you can use grids to influence the proportions of your I. If you keep the spacing between each guideline the same, you will get a uniform looking I, and if you use varying spacing, you will get a dynamic looking I.

I made a short GIF to illustrate the step by step. Check it out below.

I hope this helps and all the best with the rest of the course!

Quek Jae Sern (Jae)

Hey there Kim,

Nice spheres! I think you did a really good job with the shading. Remember that there are many ways you can shade an object and hatching is just a stylized form of shading.

If you want smoother shading, my tip would be to make your darkest areas darker. By doing this, you are widening the range of values that you can work with. With a wider range of values, every change will feel a little less abrupt and you will be able to achieve a more gradual looking shadow!

You can look at my example below.
