I am an intermediate artist and have avoided drawing animals for the longest time because I never understood how to express them. They always turned out very complicated and wonky, without any emotion or "life" in them. "Dry art".
..so to say. This course made me fall in love with drawing animals! I never thought I'd be able to express them just as lively as I would a human. With a simple reference image of any animal, I am now able to draw it however I want (of course, more stylized. This is not a course for hyper realistic animals), having confident lines with intent behind each stroke. Heavily inspired and excited to draw more!

are as it was difficult to replicate the system. Rodgon has provided a wonderful watered down anatomy framework using basic shapes which works well in all poses. His framework combined with a little bit of perspective, volume, and depth understanding does wonders. You will see the difference in your drawing soon enough. Just stick to the course as it is time taking but worth every second. He is a fantastic teacher who gives you the right tools and also informs about the limitations and learning curve. In a nutshell his system works. I am no Picasso but I have seen considerable improvement in my work which is for hobby sake. Do get a little bit hang of perspective and volume before this course. Maybe Rodgon can add a pre-module on that for absolute beginners to make this a complete course for all. I would also request him to please consider a follow-up animation course from here which builds on this system. A frame-by-frame classic would be a great starting point and then there is procreate dreams tools to make it easier. Best wishes and thank you Rodgon.

Hi Sabby!

It looks like you’re doing great so far! I particularly like how soft your blending looks.

Here are some suggestions to help with shadow placement:

  • The area where the light hits directly will be the lightest. If you accidentally make it too dark, you can gently erase parts to bring back some of the white of the paper.

  • The shadows fall on the opposite side to the light. If the light is hitting the top, the shadows will be below. If the light is coming from the right, the shadows will be on the left. You can draw lines from the light-source to the object to help visualize where they should be.

Look at objects in your everyday life and just try to observe what the shadows are doing. Drawing the things around you is a fun way to practice, too. 🙂

You have done well with these. Nice work!

Hello Jan-Olaf!

We’re really glad to hear that you enjoyed the course! All the little details you've added created a lot of extra fun and joy to the drawings.

If you wish to keep working on the castle drawing, there are some small changes you could make to the perspective on the towers.

To find the angle for the curved lines you would draw the tower as if it was a square-shaped tower first, using the perspective lines in the same way you did for the rest of the castle.

After that you draw a circle that fits inside the square formed by the perspective lines. From here you can use that circle as a guide for the rest of the curves.

You have done an excellent job with all of these and have applied every technique that you learned very well. Keep up the good work!

Hi!

Thank you for sending in your painting! This is incredible work. The subject is beautiful and your use of color is mind-blowing!

You could maybe try to have the hair on the chin flow in more various and natural directions. Even with the head clearly in motion within the scene and the hair following in the same direction, I think there could be a little more variation.

You can check out the attachments for a more visual explanation!  I hope you’ll find them helpful!  Don’t hesitate to ask if you have any more questions and I wish you a beautiful day!

Quek Jae Sern (Jae)

Hey Nadia,

I’m glad that you’re having fun with the course. Don’t worry, the three-dimensional drawings are typically the most complicated. I think the issue that you’re having here is that the initial block you drew is more of a cuboid than a cube. The starting cube will influence the final look of the drawing.

In your drawing, I’m noticing that your block needs to be slightly taller to make it a cube. Once you have a good starting point, you can use grids to influence the proportions of your I. If you keep the spacing between each guideline the same, you will get a uniform looking I, and if you use varying spacing, you will get a dynamic looking I.

I made a short GIF to illustrate the step by step. Check it out below.

I hope this helps and all the best with the rest of the course!

Quek Jae Sern (Jae)

Hey there Kim,

Nice spheres! I think you did a really good job with the shading. Remember that there are many ways you can shade an object and hatching is just a stylized form of shading.

If you want smoother shading, my tip would be to make your darkest areas darker. By doing this, you are widening the range of values that you can work with. With a wider range of values, every change will feel a little less abrupt and you will be able to achieve a more gradual looking shadow!

You can look at my example below.

I hope that helps and enjoy the rest of the course!
