During this phase, don\u2019t worry about drawing perfect lines and proportions. This is the time to explore different ways to tell the message you\u2019re shooting for! <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a great way to flesh out a few ideas without the pressure of trying to create a perfect sketch. While you\u2019re doodling, <strong>another thing you may want to consider is composition. <\/strong>We\u2019ll talk about this in the next section!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note: <\/strong>References are great for ideation and collecting inspiration. Make sure you\u2019ve taken some time to collect some references before you begin sketching your thumbnails. Which characters do you want to highlight? Where do you want the eyes of your viewers to look at? How can you best capture the message of the story by placing the key elements in the right spots? These are the questions you want to think about as you create your compositions.<\/p>\n<p>A great hack for designing a successful composition is the <strong>\u201cRule of Thirds.\u201d<\/strong> The Rule of Thirds is made up of three horizontal and three vertical lines. Place the most important elements where these lines intersect!\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rough Sketch to Final Sketch<\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXftVX_pWF4QUVNXH4L1Ou9WP3m8YwMz2o1R0kD7aEEmgy28OjYZ6sN5pIJsQ9KxyvT_4Y5k1OV2FWD30SHIR4DVLzNPi-anSKh7bJe2E739udJ4skDHnY9RCP9FWPvVa6IcLUaeug?key=agQ6Pw_1ckkggaaEO5Ohww\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:590px;height:auto\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">@itslopez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Amongst your rough sketches, there might be a couple that stick out to you more than the others. <strong>Select the sketch that best encapsulates the story you\u2019re trying to tell!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis doesn\u2019t mean the other two thumbnails are wrong; they would also make nice designs.<\/em>\u201d &#8211; @itslopez<\/p>\n<p>Each of Laia\u2019s sketches contained the same subjects, but the focus of each image was slightly different. Since her goal was to highlight her two subjects, she chose the design that put the attention on them. The other thumbnails were just as beautiful and cohesive, but either the environment or the animal took precedence in these other versions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Before making your clean line art, let\u2019s <strong>draw one more sketch!<\/strong> In this sketch, don\u2019t just focus on cleaning up the sketch you have. Take it a step further by adding facial expressions, details to the clothing, and refining the poses of your characters! Now you have a strong base to build your final line art on.
